Description: This mixed-use nearly roadside crag  has numerous sport routes of varying difficulty ranging from 5.6 to 5.12, that all can be first led then top roped.
Location: Approximately 1-½ hours from Lynchburg, VA, 45 minutes from Roanoke, VA, and 2 1/2 hours from Washington D.C.
Directions:  From D.C. head out 66 to Front Royal (1 hour).  Head south on 81 to Lexington, VA (1.5 hours).  Head west on 64 for about 30 minutes to route 220.  Head south on 220 toward the town of Iron Gate, VA.  There are a couple of parking spaces on your left, but you should drive into the residential area of Iron Gate, turn around and head north on 220.  Pull off 220 and park at the furnace.  The climbing is on your left hand side.
Approach: The wall is located within the heavily wooded are across route 220, not across the river.  Approximately 100 feet left of  the parking pullout you will see a piece of light blue knotted webbing.  Ascend the STEEP hill to the rocks.  Once at the end of the trail at the base of the cliff, you will be starring at Bip Bap Boom.  The rest of the climbs will be to your right.  Total approach time - 10 minutes.

Note:

Route 220 is unbelievably busy.  Please be careful.  We brought our dog and that was a bad idea, because of all the traffic and the STEEP ascent to the cliff.

At this point we would like to recommend that you take a look at The Lynchburg Climbing Club’s web page and Route Guide to Iron Gate by E. Angel and D. Atkinson and rendered by J. Gardner.   We have provided supplementary information, but LCC documented these runs first.
